The joint effort between Louisiana FCU and OnPath FCU led to the secure disposal of over 4.5 tons of paper and electronic waste, underscoring their dedication to the environment and data security within the community.
Credit Unions Team Up for a Record-Breaking Recycling Day
LaPlace, La. – Louisiana Federal Credit Union (FCU) joined forces with OnPath Federal Credit Union to host a Shred Day event on March 16. The collaboration between the two credit unions drew crowds from across the community to the Belle Terre branch of Louisiana FCU. The event, which was free for all participants, led to the shredding of 9,000 pounds of paper and the recycling of 1,500 pounds of electronic waste in just two hours.
This initiative not only prevented over 10.5 tons of waste from ending up in landfills but also safeguarded countless individuals from the risk of identity theft. Discarding old devices without properly wiping them gives identity thieves free access to sensitive data.
“Proper disposal of devices such as phones and computers is crucial for protecting against identity and data theft,” said Russell Barger, VP of Information Technology at Louisiana FCU. "Information left behind on discarded devices, including personal, financial, and legal data, as well as passwords, can be accessed by individuals rummaging through the garbage. Protect yourself by using proper device disposal practices."
Louisiana FCU and OnPath FCU look forward to continuing their efforts in supporting the well-being of the community, with the next Shred Day event set for Saturday, April 6, 2024. This community initiative will take place at the OnPath FCU Westwego branch, located at 1554 Westbank Expy, Westwego, LA 70094, from 9 AM to 1 PM. Attendees can look forward to free snowballs, a chance to donate blood, and the opportunity to connect with local wellness experts.
